To unlock more of a given type of weapon-assault rifles, carbines, shotguns, designated marksman rifles, personal defense weapons, handguns, machine guns, and sniper rifles-you have to score kills with that kind of weapon. In Battlefield 3, weapons were unlocked by earning new ranks. The same system of class-specific unlocks, earned by playing as each class, exists however, weapon unlocks work a little differently. The unlock paths have been mixed up a little, making the progression in some ways narrower. If, however, you earn enough squad points to unlock the entire path, the upgrades are unlocked for the duration of the game and are not lost even if your entire squad dies. If your entire squad gets wiped out, your progress toward the field upgrades is lost. These points can unlock perks, such as longer sprinting, the ability to carry more grenades, and so on. As you perform squad-based actions (such as healing squadmates, spotting enemies for your squad to kill, and so on), you earn points toward your chosen field upgrade path. Each class can choose one of four field upgrade paths (two common to all classes, two class-specific). The field upgrades from Battlefield 2142 are also back, replacing the specializations of Battlefield 3. He can set directives for the squads, deploy UAVs to reveal enemies, deploy an AC-130 gunship, and call in cruise missile strikes. The commander doesn't participate in the actual battle.
